…and it’s over!

What a year it’s been. I can’t believe it’s over and done with. So many things have come to pass this year that it’s hard to wrap my head around it being over. And for my own pleasure, I will recap them in a semi chronological order!

I finally finished the two programming classes that I was taking. I’ve learned a lot on this semester, and I’m very lucky to have had a great teacher. Now that I’m done with this class, I feel so much more confident to write any program. I love C++. It’s one lean, mean, programming machine. I remember just a year ago how frustrating it was to do anything in C++. The inability to be able to open a single text file got to me multiple times and I’m very happy that I have friends that do this for a living and that kept encouraging me. Now C++ has become a lot of a second nature. I’m not a master by any means but I can certainly write a program from scratch to do multiple things.
I’ve also developed a strong taste for text parsers and game programming. One of the cool things that we experimented with in the class, while learning inheritance and polymorphism was the idea of creating a “Cat” and “Dog” pet. I’m thinking about creating something like that for my own enjoyment. I have all the notes and I’ve been working on some drafts of how the code should behave. It would be a windows application because that’s really all the GUI programming that I know, but I’m looking into learning Java and C# which are a lot more involved in GUI based programming for PC.

Text parsers are just fun. I’m thinking about building a tool in .php to extract XML from the armory and store a sort of “Favorites” data base of several things, from profiles to individual armor. It would really save me the headache of having to search for the same items over and over again. I guess I could just simplify my life and bookmark them, or if I want to save toolbar space, I could just save the URLs… But that’s just no fun at all. I want to learn a lot more .php. Especially now that I have everything fresh in my mind and that both languages are somewhat similar.

I’m happy that I took this path. I’m also sad that I’ve left the Graphic Design path because I pursued it for so long. Art will always be my passion, but I’m also looking at programming as an art form. I’m looking forward to one day doing something meaningful with my knowledge. Maybe be part of a new era in technology and programming. It’s a long way to go still, but I’m young.
